My Friend Daniel Doesn’t Talk When outgoing Ryan meets Daniel, a boy who is too afraid to talk in school or other places outside of his home, he befriends the silent boy, defending him in school to the other children. Their friendship grows, and Daniel feels comfortable enough to talk to his new friend. Ryan's tendency to 'talk too much' enables him to help Daniel in the classroom, and he hopes for the day when his friend will be able to talk in school so that the other children may get to know the 'real' Daniel. In the meantime, he is willing to continue to be a friend to Daniel until that day. This beautifully illustrated story book is for children with severe shyness, social anxiety or selective mutism to see that they can make a friend like Ryan. It is also a helpful tool for friends of children like Daniel to understand why these children are unable to talk in certain settings. The theme - of accepting others who are different while trying to emphasise with them - is a universal one, and therefore this book may be enjoyed by all children aged from 4 to 8. While the story should not be read to the class while the child is present or without his or her permission, this book is an invaluable tool for teachers trying to understand selective mutism, and wanting to explain it to their students. For comprehensive advice and information on selective mutism, please see "The Selective Mutism Resource Manual" (Speechmark, 2001). BMA Medical Book Competition Winner Highly Commended in the BMA Patient Information Awards (Printed Materials), "My Friend Daniel Doesn't Talk" really impressed the judges: 'This leaflet has been written by a parent of a child with selective mutism who has written numerous articles on the subject'.'It is written for children to help explain some of the issues around children who 'don't talk' and has been beautifully produced and introduces a sensitive topic via a lovely story about friendship which is a great way to engage with children and inform them about a subject without making it 'an issue' and risk stigmatising a child even more...I loved the illustrations and the characters were portrayed with a gentleness and sensitivity which made the story very likeable. The humour in the story is subtle and effective and unlike many 'stories with a message' written for children, this book is a pleasurable read in its own right, and stands up as a lovely story book, but with the added bonus of including the universal theme of 'being different' and in particular providing a basic explanation for selective mutism. I really loved this book'.'What really came through, is that it was written with real thought, care and from someone who really understands and empathises with the subject matter. Well done!'.

Benny Beats His Shyness Overcoming kids’ social anxiety is what this book is all about.
Benny Beats his Shyness introduces a unique roadmap.
For children: A funny and engaging story that shows how to help socially anxious kids.
For parents: Simple strategies based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy principles. The story describes Benny, the lion cub's journey towards beating his kids' social anxiety issues while thoroughly outlining his parents' strategies to help him.
Continue reading Benny starts out as a young cub with severe social difficulties. He fears speaking with his peers and with adults. His insecurity causes him to avoid participating in activities and keeps him isolated.
Benny’s parents ask themselves, “How can I help my shy kid?” Things change radically when Benny and his parents meet an old, wise owl. The owl guides them on a journey through which Benny learns to overcome his anxiety. At the same time, his parents understand what their beloved child goes through and how to support the kid's social anxiety. It is almost impossible to eliminate or stop kids' social anxiety altogether. Still, it is very much possible to learn how to overcome it. Benny's journey was not easy; along the way, he and his parents had to overcome one challenge after another. The result was a dramatic change in his ability to defeat his shyness. Today Benny can communicate with cubs and adults easily; he can speak in class and has a rich social life.
He even fulfilled his dream of playing soccer with his peers. This book is meant to help children with social anxiety issues and parents to social-anxious kids.
It introduces strategies that consist of simple, proven Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) practices based on Dr. Jonathan Kushnir's years of experience treating hundreds of children and adults. This book is excellent as a: Helper for parents to social-anxious kids in getting their kids engaged

It’s Okay To Be Quiet It’s Okay to Be Quiet is an empowering true story about a young girl navigating her early school days while struggling to find her voice. Inspired by my own journey with selective mutism, this book seeks to capture the invisible fears and the sense of isolation that often come with being “the quiet one.”
This story is for every child who feels unseen or misunderstood and who might not yet have the words to explain why. It’s a gentle reminder that children with selective mutism are not alone, and that there’s a name for what they’re experiencing.
At the end of the book, you’ll find a Q&A for parents as well as the actual reflections from the therapist who helped me through my journey. My hope is that this story reassures young readers that it’s okay to be quiet for now - that your voice isn’t lost, it’s simply waiting until it’s ready.

Milo – My Silent Friend “Milo, My Silent Friend” is more than just a picture book — it is a gentle and powerful story that opens hearts and minds. Designed for children ages 6 and up, as well as for parents, educators, and teachers, this book provides an opportunity for meaningful conversations about friendship, empathy, selective mutism, inclusion, and diversity.
Continue reading What is selective mutism?
Selective mutism is an anxiety disorder that mainly affects preschool and school-age children. It prevents them from speaking and verbally interacting in certain social situations, even though they have no difficulties with language or comprehension. For a child who experiences selective mutism, their words remain locked inside, as if in a secret treasure chest. This book aims to shed light on this condition in a way that is accessible, tender, and child-friendly.
The story of Milo and Leo
Milo is a bright, creative boy who loves dinosaurs, superheroes, and building tall towers with colorful blocks. At home, he talks endlessly, telling stories and sharing his thoughts. But at school, Milo’s voice seems to vanish. He doesn’t answer his teachers, Giulia and Jessica, and he doesn’t speak to his classmates.
The story is narrated by Leo, his best friend, who never gives up on Milo. Through Leo’s eyes, readers witness the struggles and emotions of both children — Milo, who longs to speak but cannot, and Leo, who is determined to stand by his friend with patience and kindness. Step by step, Leo learns that friendship doesn’t need to be forced; it grows through love, respect, and the courage to wait.

Elle’s Silent Life with Selective Mutism In a world where words often take center stage, Elle embarked on a unique journey—one where silence became her greatest strength. With selective mutism as her constant companion, Elle learned the art of communication beyond spoken language. Her story is one of silent soaring confidence that unfolded against the backdrop of a gymnastics mat.
Continue reading From a young age, Elle faced the challenges of selective mutism, a condition that rendered her voiceless in certain situations. While her peers chattered away, Elle found solace in her silence, using her keen observation skills to understand the world around her. In her quiet moments, she discovered a reservoir of strength, resilience, and determination that would serve her well in the years to come. Gymnastics, with its grace and precision, became Elle's sanctuary. On the mats, she found a language of her own—a language where flips and tumbles, balance and poise, spoke louder than words ever could. Gymnastics allowed her to express herself without uttering a single sound, and she excelled in this silent artistry. Elle's silent soaring confidence was a testament to her ability to face challenges head-on. She learned that courage wasn't always about speaking up; sometimes, it meant expressing herself through the elegant movements of her body. Each routine became a story, a silent narrative of her inner strength and determination, etched in the minds of her audience. Through gymnastics, Elle discovered a supportive community that saw her for who she truly was—a fierce and talented athlete. Her teammates and coaches embraced her silent presence, recognizing the spirit that burned brightly within her. In the gym, she felt understood and accepted, and her mutism became just another facet of her incredible identity. As the years went by, Elle's silent soaring confidence extended beyond the gymnastics floor and into her everyday life. She learned to navigate the challenges of selective mutism with poise, knowing that her strength was not defined by her ability to speak. Her experiences in gymnastics had taught her the importance of perseverance, discipline, and self-belief. Elle's story is a testament to the idea that confidence can take many forms, and sometimes, it thrives in silence. Her journey is a reminder that every individual has a unique path to self-discovery, and it's often in the quiet moments that we find our true voices. Elle's silent soaring confidence reminds us that we can achieve greatness not despite our differences but because of them, and that sometimes, the most powerful messages are the ones left unspoken.

Charlie and Ammy Amygdala Sometimes our brain's alarm goes off even when we're safe. Charlie and Ammy Amygdala is a warm, reassuring children's book that helps young children understand anxiety, the amygdala, the freeze response, and why sometimes their voice can feel stuck — even when they really want to speak.
Continue reading Created by Jo Brady, a Speech Pathologist with almost 30 years of experience and both professional and lived experience of selective mutism, this story gives children and the adults supporting them a gentle, child-friendly way to understand what happens in the brain and body when we feel anxious. Charlie is learning about an important little part of her brain called the amygdala. Its job is to help keep her safe by sending an alarm when it thinks there might be danger. Sometimes that alarm is really helpful. It warns Charlie about real dangers and helps her stay safe. But sometimes Ammy sounds the alarm when Charlie is actually safe. When someone speaks to Charlie, her alarm can go off. Her body feels uncomfortable, she freezes, and suddenly using her voice feels incredibly hard. Through Charlie's experiences, children learn to recognise what anxiety can feel like in their own bodies and understand the difference between an alarm warning them about real danger and an overactive alarm that makes something safe feel scary. With the loving support of her mum, Charlie learns to pause, take a big breath and remind herself: I am strong. I am brave. I can do hard things. Charlie discovers that being brave doesn't mean not feeling anxious, worried or uncomfortable. It means recognising those feelings and giving something difficult a try anyway. With each small brave step, Charlie — and Ammy — begin to learn that she is safe and capable. A gentle resource for children and the adults supporting them Charlie and Ammy Amygdala has been carefully created to build children's understanding of anxiety while encouraging positive self-talk, emotional awareness, confidence and resilience. The book also contains practical information and guidance for parents, caregivers, educators and therapists, providing a shared language they can use with children to talk about anxiety and support them when things feel difficult. The supporting information helps adults understand:The amygdala and the body's alarm response How anxiety can feel and present in a child's body and behaviour The freeze response and why an anxious child may be unable to speak How to help children recognise real danger and overactive alarms How positive self-talk and emotional awareness can support an anxious child How to encourage children through small, achievable brave steps Ideal for reading together at home, in classrooms, therapy sessions and wellbeing settings, Charlie and Ammy Amygdala gives children and adults a shared way to understand anxiety and talk about what is happening when the body's alarm goes off. Because being brave doesn't mean we don't feel anxious. Sometimes being brave is taking one small step even when something feels hard. About the Author Jo Brady is a Speech Pathologist with almost 30 years of experience and a special interest in selective/situational mutism and childhood anxiety. Having experienced selective mutism herself as a child, teenager and young adult, and later supporting her daughter through selective mutism and social anxiety, Jo brings together professional expertise and lived experience to create gentle, encouraging resources that help children understand anxiety, build confidence and discover what they are capable of — one small brave step at a time.

QUIET: A Toddler’s Storybook Mira is two and a half years old, and the world can feel very big and very loud. QUIET follows Mira through three ordinary moments that ask a lot of a small child who isn't ready to talk yet: a birthday party bursting with noise, a new babysitter she's never met, and a room full of strangers at story time. In each one, Mira goes quiet, and a patient grown-up helps her feel safe without forcing her to perform.
Continue reading Written by a former elementary school teacher, QUIET gently introduces young readers, and the grown-ups who love them, to selective mutism and social anxiety, without ever reaching for words too big for a toddler to feel seen by. Every story ends with a short reflection for grown-ups, four "Point and Talk" prompts that don't require your child to answer in words, and one small challenge to try together that week. QUIET is Book One in the Mira Series, gentle, honest stories that meet children exactly where they are.

A Quiet Kind of Thunder Perfect for fans of Morgan Matson and Jandy Nelson. A girl who can’t speak and a boy who can’t hear go on a journey of self-discovery and find support with each other in this gripping, emotionally resonant novel for “readers who enjoyed John Green’s Turtles All the Way Down” (Booklist) from bestselling author Sara Barnard. Steffi doesn’t talk, but she has so much to say. Rhys can’t hear, but he can listen.
Continue reading Steffi has been a selective mute for most of her life. The condition’s name has always felt ironic to her, because she certainly does not “select” not to speak. In fact, she would give anything to be able to speak as easily and often as everyone around her can. She suffers from crippling anxiety, and uncontrollably, in most situations simply can’t open her mouth to get out the words. Steffi’s been silent for so long that she feels completely invisible. But Rhys, the new boy at school, sees her. He’s deaf, and her knowledge of basic sign language means that she’s assigned to help him acclimate. To Rhys, it doesn’t matter that Steffi doesn’t talk. As they find ways to communicate, Steffi discovers that she does have a voice, and that she’s falling in love with the one person who makes her feel brave enough to use it. But as she starts to overcome a lifelong challenge, she’ll soon confront questions about the nature of her own identity and the very essence of what it is to know another person.
